During "Shift," three intertwining voices chimed like church bells ringing from a steeple. Droste frequently sang at a higher pitch, his dramatic echoes answering Rossen's somber croon. Melodies overlapped and vocals stacked into layers. In Ed Droste, Daniel Rossen and Chris Taylor, Grizzly Bear touted a triple threat of able multi-instrumentalists and harmonizers that touched on chamber ("A Simple Answer"), surf ("Two Weeks") and noise ("Yet Again") pop. Above it all, voices rose and fell before beginning the cycle anew. Horn loops darted between staggered grooves and percolating electronics crackling drumbeats shadowboxed with waves of keyboards. In less than two weeks, Grizzly Bear will be liberating a re-release of their 2012 album, Shields. ![]() Augmented by keyboardist Aaron Arntz, and assisted by a flotilla of effects pedals, Grizzly Bear honed in on expanding to cinematic proportions the pensive vibes, twinkling textures and enigmatic structures that can sound akin to personal symphonies when experienced through headphones. ![]()
